A. Objectives: 

- By the end of the lesson, students can listen for gist and for specific imformation about a traditional dis: five coloured sticky rice. And after the lesson, students can write the recipe for a traditional dish.

B. Language knowledge: 

1. Structure (Language Focus): : present simple 

2. Vocabulary: represent, element, harmony, turmeric, shredded coconut

C. Teaching aids: 

1. Students: Students’ books, teacher’s book,

2. Teacher: a cassette and a disk

D. Skills: Listening + Writing

E. Procedures 

I/ Warm up: Whisper

- Teacher divides ss into 2 teams

- Call on 5 ss from each team to make 2 lines. Ss in  each  line number ss from  1 to 5 and the distance from  one to one is 1meter 

- T whispers one sentence to the number 1 of two teams. They must whisper to the next. The fifth student from each team write the sentence on the board.

1. The Thai have a population of about one and a half million people living in the province of Lai Chau.

2. The Thai also grow other crops on burnt- out land. They also make bamboo items, and weave cloth.

- The team with  more correct sentences is the winner

This rice is only made when there are guests. - Play the recording once or twice. - Ask Ss to listen carefully and tick True or False according to what they hear in the passage. Key: 1.T 2.F 3.T 4.F 5.F * Activity 3: Listen again and complete the sentences 1. Five-coloured sticky rice is made by ethnic minorities in the northern regions. 2. The dishes has five colours: red, yellow, green, and white. 3. It is made using roots and leaves. 4. The green colour symbolises 5. Five-coloured sticky rice is made on special occasions, for festivals and - Play the recording again. - Ss write down the words as they listen. - Play the recording again for them to check. - T correct as a class. Key: 1. mountainous 2. purple / black 3. natural 4. plants 5. ceremonies 2. Writing: * Activity 1: Read the notes on how to make yellow sticky rice Ingredients - Sticky rice: 500g - Turmeric: three tbsp extract - Shredded coconut: one cup - Salt: ¼ tsp Note 1. Soak sticky rice- water- five hours + 2. Rinse rice- drain 3. Mix well w/ tumeric extract, wait- 10 mons. 4. Add coconut + salt- mix well 5. Steam- 30 mins- check cooked 6. Serve - Tell Ss to read the notes carefully * Activity 2: Change the notes into cooking steps to show a foreign visitor how to make yellow sticky rice. - Have Ss write full sentences to show the steps to cook the rice. Make sure that they use proper connectors first/firstly, second/secondly - T asks Ss to write a paragraph as homework Sample cooking steps: This delicious dish is really easy to make. First, you need to soak the rice in water for at least five hours. Then rinse the rice and drain it well. Next, add the turmeric extract and mix it well. Then wait for 10 minutes. After that, add the coconut and salt. Remember to mix it well. Finally, steam the rice for 30 minutes. Check that it is fully cooked. You can serve this dish with chicken III/ Consolidation.
